It was established in the events of Avengers: Infinity War that Thanos is the most powerful villain of Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially when he has all Infinity stones in his possession. The God of Thunder has managed to get close to take him down.
Thor acquires a new weapon after he has used Mjolnir and made a trip to Nidavellir. This new axe-hammer hybrid weapon is called the Stormbreaker. Although the weapon is capable enough to take down the Mad Titan in one blow even the god makes a mistake –
He didn’t go for the head.
The power of Thor, post getting this weapon, has remained to be disputed as people have started to question – Which is more powerful, the Stormbreaker or the Infinity Gauntlet. In the recent screenings of Infinity War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have finally addressed this question.
Russo was caught saying, “It certainly can counteract the Infinity Gauntlet.”
He further adds, “I think that key moment, though, is that Thanos was caught off guard. He didn’t know the power of what was coming at him. I mean, maybe he could have used the Stones differently had he understood what that weapon was, but it came out of nowhere.”
If only for functional purposes, a sure step up from Mjolnir, Stormbreaker is a name that might put some fans off. Beta Ray Bill initially wielded a weapon with the same name, but Thor’s new weapon is more similar to the hammer from the Ultimate Comics line.
The Head of Visual Development from Marvel Studios, Ryan Meinerding talks on a new weapon of Thor in Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie. He even went on to reveal it was chosen to follow that angle.

He said, “I always felt that Beta Ray Bill’s weapon form the comics – Stormbreaker – was a little too similar to Mjolnir. So I was looking to more of the Mjolnir from The Ultimates, where it has more corners and edges, and feels more like a heavy, solid thing as opposed to another Mjolnir-sized weapon–almost that it feels unbalanced. It’s almost too powerful. It takes someone incredibly powerful to pick it up because it’s such an unbalanced weapon.”
This new weapon, Stormbreaker will be again used by Thor when Avengers 4 premieres in theaters and fans will witness the same on May 3, 2019.
