Have you ever asked this to yourself, what would have been DCEU’s fate if Warner Bros had produced Green Lantern sequel or New Gods? The DCEU seems to be growing continuously, with super hero movies like The Flash, Black Adam, and The Suicide Squad, all set to arrive by next year, as well as Zack Snyder’s latest i.e., Justice League too has been an applauded release, it has undoubtedly restored the director’s true vision. But, be it DC fans or movies, the journey hasn’t been quite smooth. Although, so many DC movies have been cancelled over the years, yet they looked quite promising. Yes, there were several reasons behind the cancellation of the release but, we’re quite sure it’d have changed a lot about how the fans would perceive DC today.
Ten cancelled DCEU Movies That Could Be Game Changers
Ben Affleck’s The Batman
A confirmation was received by Warner Bros just after Batman V Superman was released, that Affleck would co-write, direct, and star in a movie most porbably named The Batman. This movies would come just after the Justice League, and would show Batman fighting up Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello). According to the plot, The Riddler would too have shown up in the film. Since Batman’s movies is a big deal, one should know had this happened neither would Matt Reeves’ forthcoming film The Batman movie and also the GCPD series would have taken place.
After the release of Batman Returns, the Warner Bros hired Tim Burton for a Superman movie based on the “Death of Superman”, which is a graphic novel. It would star Nicholas Cage aka the Man of Steel. It most probably would have been named Superman Reborn or Superman Lives, featuring Brainiac, Lex Luthor, and maybe even Doomsday. Although, the movie got and never released, which lead to the coming of Superman Returns instead, and later Man of Steel and next following the complete DCEU itself. The today’s DCEU wouldn’t have been here in case Superman Lives had released in the theatres and gained success.
In 2014 itself Warner Bros. had created a plan about the upcoming DCEU movies just after the release of Batman V Superman. The movies following next were Justice League’s two parts, Aquaman and Wonder Woman and The Flash which have already happened and the left ones would soon release but, same wasn’t the case for Cyborg. This movie has been cancelled, most probably because of the lack of confidence. Had the movie released it’d be DCEU’s first with a Black actor in lead.
Justice League Mortal
Even before the release of The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. had decided to create a Justice League movie. Which most probably would be named Justice League Mortal, planned to release in 2009’s summer. The main villain as decided would be Maxwell Lord while Green Lantern was supposed to be a part of the team. Later, the movie got cancelled due to the immense success of The Dark Knight, which for the makers meant that, creating a Justice League movie would only spur DC’s success.
Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay wanted to make a film based on comic’s legend Jack Kirby’s New Gods series, just after the Justice League. New Gods was basically about Darkseid’s past, since DC had never made a movie solely about the villain, they decided to cancel it.
Green Lantern 2
In 2010, the expectations from Green Lantern film were quite high. Which made everyone confident about a follow up sequel, unluckily the first movie failed commercially which closed the doors for its sequel.
Harley Quinn Vs The Joker / Gotham City Sirens
Following the success of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros announced many films starring Harley Quinn, with the presumption that Suicide Squad 2 was also in the works. The Gotham City Sirens was being directed by Suicide Squad’s David Ayer, and Harley Quinn Vs the Joker, which would reintroduce Jared Leto as the Joker. Had these films planned to release, The Suicide Squad may not even be released this year.
Batman Vs Superman
Various movies had released but one couldn’t find any major released between Batman & Robin (in 1997) and Batman Begins (in 2005). Although, Batman Vs Superman was to release between the time period of Batman Begins and Superman Returns. The plot was to get the two fighting against one another. Sadly, Warner Bros. later scrapped the film because they thought it was “too dark.”
Mitchell & Lord’s The Flash
Warner Bros. have been attempting to get a Flash film into cinemas since the late ’80s, though the idea has been moving through various filmmakers and was was finally scheduled for release in March 2018, only a few months after Justice League’s release. As planned it would be filmed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the same team as behind The LEGO Batman Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but the project got cancelled due to the duo dropping out. The Flash, now, has grown into a bizarre film which threatens both viewers and DC to reset the whole DCEU.
Justice League 2
The biggest loss for the DC fans have been the cancellation of Justice League 2 and maybe a third of its kind, if the plan went well. Zack Synder was given the responsibility for the same, but, after the poor performance of Batman V Superman in theatres, Warner Bros. changed their minds and reduced Justice League to a single film. Although, Zack Snyder’s mind behind the Justice League hinted to an epic plotline that would have connected all of the DCEU films, but it wasn’t DCEU’s fate.
