A cross-sectoral effort called Rang De Neela is committed to teaching people about the dangers of untreated metabolic disorders, including diabetes. It recognizes the transformative power of art in enhancing lives. The initiative intends to promote the value of early intervention, emphasizing preventing amputations, especially in rural and semi-urban areas across India. Rang De Neela has introduced a symbolic emblem that acts as an effective tool to spread awareness about Diabetic Neuropathy in order to overcome language barriers and reach a wider audience.
The rural outreach initiative was launched by Smt. Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Minority for Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs. She adorned the lower limb of the Rang De Neela emblem, an art mannequin conveying the significance of preventing amputations, with a blue protection band. Numerous celebrities and business owners have contributed to the cause by posting pictures of themselves tying the blue safety band on social media after being moved by this gesture.
Actress Sonali Bendre joined the #BluePledge movement on Instagram by posting a photo with the following message: “Diabetes, a lifestyle disease that is common in our nation, steals lives away in silence. Diabetic complications put Indians at risk for amputation. Early detection is very important. I pledge to protect them by supporting the @rangdeneela campaign.”
Famous people like Ruhaanika Dhawan and Rohit Bose Roy have also joined the #BluePledge on Instagram. Additionally, prominent industrialist Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw endorsed Rang De Neela and acknowledged the importance and originality of the project.
According to diabetologist and co-founder of Rang De Neela, Dr. Rajiv Kovil, “In India, where millions of people are affected, diabetes is a growing problem. Amputation is one of the most serious complications of diabetes and is frequently brought on by slow diagnosis or poor treatment. In fact, with over 100,000 individuals losing limbs annually due to diabetes, India ranks second in the world for these amputations.”
Using visual aids to promote awareness works well in a nation like India where there is a low level of health literacy. A 3D art mannequin with a statement about health on its base acts as Rang De Neela’s logo, serving as a powerful representation. As a pledge to raise awareness about Diabetic Neuropathy, participants in the #BluePledge campaign tie a blue protection band around the lower limb of the campaign’s logo.
