Just a little more than a week after Hansal Mehta’s Scoop became available on the streaming platform Netflix, Karishma Tanna, who portrays the title character, crime reporter Jagruti Pathak, who is accused of killing a fellow journalist, and husband Varun Bangera went for a fast weekend trip to Dubai. Tanna found herself surrounded by happy faces and warm greetings from other travelers who had also watched the series shortly after clearing passport control. Crowds formed as soon as word got out that the actor was heading for the departure gates. The following night I went out on a dinner date, and we had people coming up to us continuously with very sweet compliments. “I was shocked! There were people en route to Canada and the USA, and they told me they were binge watching the show,” adds Tanna.
For the role, Karishma Tanna had to put in the hardest preparation of her life. She toured police stations, followed crime reporters around the newsroom, and hung out at the Press Club in Mumbai in order to get to know the nature of an ambitious journalist who would do everything to acquire a scoop. I went above and beyond to make sure it was a job well done, and I also had to be responsible because it is based on a true story and someone’s life, even though I have worked in a competitive entertainment industry and have never been overly ambitious.
Her efforts were rewarded when Mahesh Bhatt, Anurag Kashyap, and Nikhil Advani began calling her. Some of the remarks included “Karishma Tanna – you have been a revelation,” “This is Karishma Tannna 2.0,” “Phor dala hain,” and “Where was this Karishma for so long?”
Pushing herself to take on tasks she could never have imagined herself in was always one of Tanna’s goals. Tanna adds that as an actor, “Regardless of how many years you have worked there, there is always something new to learn. I still have a lot of desire to perform, and I’m eager to continue learning from different producers and directors.”
The future appears exciting as she continues to receive admiration from admirers all across the world. Casting directors and movie producers have contacted frequently and requested meetings as a result of the success of Scoop. We eagerly await learning what comes next for her.
