In a couple of days, India’s harvest festivals will begin.

There are various festivals associated with Lohri in North India, such as Makar Sankranti in Bengal, Magha Bihu in Assam, and Tai Pongal in Kerala. As winter draws to a close and the sun begins rising from “Uttrarayan,” heralding a less chilly season, people from all walks of life gather to celebrate Lohri. The festival lifts spirits high and provides a much-needed break from everyday monotony. Moreover, it brings people together regardless of caste or class; they exchange gifts and share meals as they put aside all their differences. Lohri is an occasion of joyous reunion and harmony among people. Bollywood Actress Chahatt Khanna discusses what Lohri means to her and how she celebrates it.

My favorite thing about Lohri is that it takes place during the winter season. As always, I make sure to celebrate this festival with close friends and family. It feels good to be around a bonfire with your loved ones and close friends. I love gorging on food, and sweets, and especially the Lohri special of groundnuts.”

As Lohri represents fertility, it is important for newlyweds and newborns. People gather around the bonfire at night and throw til, popcorn, and rice into the flames. Prayers are being offered to the bonfire for prosperity & abundance. Traditional folk songs and dancing are performed as a way to make merry.
