Many communities across India celebrate various festivals at the start of the year. With Makar Sankranti, Pongal and Lohri, there is no end to festivities along with the new year, and it is Makarsankranti that kicks off the year.
Makar Sankranti is an exciting day. For Harsh Rajput, kite-flying was one of the most highly-anticipated experiences in childhood. We would lose ourselves in the activity, flying kites from sunrise to sunset. Exploring the city, trying various street food and competing with friends are all part of this wonderful time. I used to gorge on laddus and other sweets, visiting friends, neighbors and family members – a fond memory for the Pishachini Star!
Makar Sankranti is a widely celebrated festival across India, signalling the end of winter. Every region has different customs – from exchanging sweets to taking a dip in holy water, people revere the day differently. The most noteworthy tradition of Makar Sankranti is kite-flying which delights everyone regardless of age. On this day, the skies are filled with colourful and vibrant kites that add a unique charm to the atmosphere. It’s truly mesmerizing!
