This day is full of enthusiasm and energy – we fly kites and prepare traditional sweets such as gajak and rewadi. Donating on Makar Sankranti is also considered auspicious, be it sugar, rice, jaggery or sesame seeds, urad dal, moong dal and clothes. However, we need to be mindful of the sharp threads of the kites; they can cause injury to birds who may collide with them. Some people even do this intentionally – this must be stopped. To prevent birds from getting hurt, one should ensure that the area around them has a clear sky. The lively atmosphere of Makar Sankranti should benefit not only humans but also birds!
