February 14, when we all are busy celebrating & talking about Valentine’s Day, we would like to talk about actress Madhubala. 14th February is also Madhubala’s birthday who is also known as Mughal-e-Azam’s Anarkali. Today if she was alive, she would have been celebrating her 86th birthday. Her life was full of so much pain & sorrow that hearing her story even you will feel bad about her.
By the age of 36, she had marked her identity by playing a big role in the world of theater & cinema that even today people still remember her. Even today many actresses consider her as their role model. Born on February 14, 1933, in Delhi, Madhubala’s childhood name was Mumtaz. When Madan Mohan’s father watched Mumtaz in a program of children in Delhi Aakashwani, he was taken by her beauty in the first glance. After that, she was offered the role of a child artist in the Bombay Talkies movie ‘Basant’. Madhubala’s life journey from a child artist to an iconic actress has been amazing!

It is said that an astrologer has already told her parents that Mumtaz would go on to earn a lot of success and wealth, but her life would meet a sad fate in the end. Then her father Ayatollah Khan came to Mumbai from Delhi in search of betterment after this prediction.
However, after ‘Basant’, Mumtaz moved ahead in her film journey by acting and singing in some movie of Ranjeet Studios. Devika Rani was very impressed by her performance in ‘Basant’ and she changed her name from Mumtaz to ‘Madhubala’. Madhubala’s cinematic training continued to run. Madhubala was far ahead of time. Did you know that at the age of only 12, she had learned driving!

Madhubala was made the heroine for the first time by the director Kedar Sharma. The film’s name was ‘Neelkamal’ and the hero was Raj Kapoor. After this film, she has been called the “Goddess of the Screen” (Venus Of The Screen). But she got great success and popularity from the movie ‘Mahal’. Ashok Kumar was his hero in this suspense film. This film has made many histories.

After the success of ‘Mahal’, Madhubala never looked back. With the established actors of that time, many films came and tasted success one after the other. She worked with all the legendary actors like Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Devanand etc. During this time, some of her films also flopped. Since her family was fully dependent on her earnings, so a few bad choices in films proved bad for her family. Also, her father was also her manager.

However, despite the failures, she did not give up. In 1958, one after the other, her 4 movies – ‘Phagun’, ‘Howrah Bridge’, ‘Black Water’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ became a super hit! But when ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ was released in 1960, it brought Madhubala to a whole new different level! Her role as ‘Anarkali’ is said to be the most important role of her life.

During the film, her health started to deteriorate, but she remained committed. It took a nine-year-long time to make this film! Speaking of Madhubala’s Love Life, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala were often the talks of the town. Their love story started as a romantic movie script and ended in the same way only. When Madhubala came to Dilip Kumar’s life, she was only 17 years old. But in the love story of both, Madhubala’s father became a villain and in the end, the roads of this beloved couple separated.

After Dilip Kumar, Madhubala’s heart once again started beating for singer and actor Kishore Kumar. Kishore won the heart of Madhubala by singing the song ‘ek ladki bhigi–bhagi si…’ in the movie ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ and the two got married. After marriage, it was revealed that Madhubala had a small hole in the heart. Becoming helpless, Madhubala stayed bedridden for many years. Kishore Kumar used to visit Madhubala sometime in a month or two. Kishore said that whenever he visited Madhubala, she used to start crying. And he does not want her to become even more sick by crying!
On February 23, 1969, she finally said goodbye to this world. Madhubala was suffering from heart disease, which cam to knowledge in the 1950s. But, this truth was kept hidden from everyone. But, when things got worse then they could not be kept hidden anymore. Sometimes, her health used to severely deteriorate on the set of films. When she went to London for treatment, doctors refused to do the surgery because they feared that she might not survive the surgery. She spent the last nine years of her life on the bed. Two years after her demise, the film ‘Jalwa’ was released, which was her last film!
